Marrakech is not a city that struggles with things to do and places to go. It’s where Riads often serve up better food than restaurants, where price is rarely an indicator of quality, and where it isn’t always easy to find somewhere selling beer and wine.

Our resident curator, Youssef, a born and bred Marrakchi, is on hand as your personal guide. With Youssef’s local knowledge, he’ll map a story unique to you and your curiosities. A curated way to experience Marrakech; One of life’s chapters you’ll co-author with the city.

Calligraphy with Noureddine Daifallah

Step inside the studio of acclaimed Moroccan artist Noureddine Daifallah, whose work bridges classical Arabic calligraphy and contemporary expression. His pieces have been exhibited internationally—and one of them hangs proudly in our Riad.

In this intimate 4–5 hour experience, he will guide you through the philosophy and practice of Arabic calligraphy, with translation provided by an English-speaking guide. You’ll learn the structure of the script, the flow of the line, and the meditative rhythm of the brush.

A traditional Moroccan lunch is included, shared in the calm of the artist’s creative space.

Chapter Thirty-nine

The Lost Manuscript

It began with a single, weathered page found in a Fez bookstall, himself lost in the maze of the medina—its script unfamiliar, yet strangely magnetic, like a map written in memory.

Curious, the traveller brought it to a local calligrapher. In a quiet atelier, the page was studied, its lines traced with care, revealing not just meaning, but direction.

In the stillness of that space, the traveller realised: he wasn’t lost. He was being shown how to see.

Artisans discovery

Join our friend and artist Abdessamia for an exclusive workshop tour. Begin in his studio, where you’ll hear about his artistic journey from the son of a metal artisan to a creator of stunning metal works. He  will personally guide you through various ateliers in the area, offering an interactive experience. Witness artisans at work in their authentic spaces, engaging in trades such as woodcarving, metal foundry, brass work, cement tile making, weaving, and pottery. These are not stores but the actual ateliers, typically unseen by the public. This experience provides an insight into the diverse trades and the skilled individuals behind them. Marrakech, a renowned artisanal hub, offers a perfect setting for those eager to explore Moroccan traditional handcrafts.

Crafting Timeless Connections

In Marrakech’s heart, Paul, a retired Boston carpenter, sought wonder, not work.

Abdessamia, an artist from another continent and generation, welcomed him into his studio. The air was thick with creation, bridging worlds and eras.

Amidst the hum of craftsmanship, Paul discovered a kindred spirit in Abdessamia, rekindling his own memories.

Gates & Dynasties: A Sidecar Journey Through Time

Discover Marrakech from a new perspective—tucked into the sidecar of a vintage motorcycle. This unique city tour explores the rich history behind the city walls and legendary gates of the Medina, each one a marker of power, culture, and trade.

Your journey begins prior to departure with an introduction to Morocco’s dynasties and its pivotal role in the Muslim world, offering essential context for what you’ll soon see. From there, you’ll glide through the city’s pulse—stopping at select gates to perhaps visit local artisans, a traditional beldi pastry shop, or a hidden point of interest that brings history into the present.

The Eighth Gate

They thought they knew Marrakech. The medina’s rhythm, the shortcuts through the souks, the gates they’d passed a hundred times—Bab Doukkala, Bab el-Khemis, Bab Agnaou. Familiar routes, familiar rituals.

But this time, in the sidecar, the gates became witness to centuries of arrival, defence, procession. Dynasties rose and fell through these arches, yet somehow, they had never stopped to see.

At Bab el-Robb, they paused. The guide spoke softly of empires, trade, and the reason the gate faced south. 

In that moment, the traveller realised: they had never really entered the city. Not like this.

Experience the Iconic Medina Mechoui

Starting at 6am, Lamine Hadj Mustapha meticulously prepares lamb in terracotta ovens dug into the ground. The result is sold by the kilogram to eager customers clamoring for a share. Known as the ‘King of Méchoui’ in Marrakech, even Gordon Ramsay remarked it was “worthy of serving at the Savoy”. Extremely popular, we will arrange for the dish to be reserved and brought to you on a nearby rooftop, accompanied by a simple Moroccan salad and vegetable tagine. Crispy and succulent, it is best enjoyed with cumin salt. And you won’t have to fight for a share of his daily preparation … A taste of Morocco’s rich culinary heritage, one that King Hassan II himself has called on to enjoy.

Chapter Seventeen

Sensory Pilgrimage

Lost in the labyrinth of the souks, he sought more than direction—he craved a connection.

Each corner overwhelmed his senses. Amidst the twisting alleys, he found Chez Lamine Hadj Mustapha.

The enticing aromas and bustling crowd drew him in. ‘Why is this place so popular, he wondered’?

Later, on a quiet rooftop overlooking the Medina, each bite revealed the answer.

A Curated experience of the Marrakchi Tangia

This begins in Dar Al Dall’s kitchen, where hands on, you will assemble this iconic dish with the help of our Head Chef, Zakia, alongside our curator who will tell you about its history. We will then take you on a stroll to the embers of our local Hammam, where some beautiful signing awaits you. The Hamman fire keeper will watch all day over your Tangia, which will be served at night on our rooftop, joined by local musicians.

This is a dish steeped in tradition. The cooking is unhurried, ritualised by the use of the Hammam’s embers. A testament to the art of slow food, where time itself is an ingredient, and every bite a celebration of Marrakech’s culinary and cultural legacy.

Chapter Twenty-six

Echoes of Embers

She hesitated, fingers hovering above the ingredients. In Dar Al Dall’s kitchen, under Zakia’s gentle guidance, she dared to touch history.

The walk to the Hammam, carrying her creation under her arm, ended with songs by the embers.

By night, on the rooftop, musicians played; the Tangia, now complete, was a slow dance of flavors, a testament to patience and tradition, each bite a silent celebration.

Tucked within the cacophony and vibrancy of the Mellah Quarter, we’ll find Khalid. A spice dealer and a member of the Dar Al Dall family, you could say that spices are in his blood. And after whiling an afternoon away in the company of Khalid – his family traditions, his culture, and his culinary passions – they’ll be in yours too. In this journey through spices, you’ll be absorbed into the very essence of Moroccan culture, and the unique spirit of our Riad.

Chapter Fifty

The Spice of Marrakech

‘Turmeric, cumin, ginger, and is that… cinnamon?’ she thinks as aromas from the heaped wicker baskets waft past her nose.

Together with the warmth radiating from the shady walls and the distant cries of the traders just outside, it is a total assault on the senses. This is Marrakech alright, and it is, delightful.

Our onsite couscous dining experience

It is said we can thank the Imazighen people for the communal tradition of feasting on couscous on Fridays. This is a tradition that has been around since the 7th century.

Our Dar Al Dall is your home and becomes your family on Friday. Come and participate in traditional couscous preparation in the morning (with pastries and coffee prepared Moroccan style while you do). Later in the day take a moment, phones and emails aside, to enjoy it lazily on our roof terrace as musicians or storytellers celebrate the end of the week in style.

Friday couscous

She was on her way out, and in the courtyard noticed some great smells.

“Come on in” beckoned the chef, taking fresh bread out of the oven.

She had never really thought about how couscous is prepared; truth be told she had never really thought about couscous. But preparing this dish was just what she needed, a sort of meditation, a journey through the softest sand imaginable.

This bespoke experience departs from our Dar Al Dall, walking you through the medina at early morning light to some of our most scenic and special spots.

You’ll be equipped with our Leica SOFORT2 instant camera, which will give you real memories we can turn into physical reminders while our guide also captures any missed moments with their own digital camera.

A Pinch of Spice, a Dash of Wonder

In the Riad’s kitchen, she realized quickly that cooking Moroccan food required more than a recipe—it demanded courage.

Spices flew, measurements were more “intuition” than “exact,” and her attempt at kneading bread became something more akin to arm wrestling.

Guided by the seasoned hands of Zakia, she stumbled her way through the ritual, only burning herself twice. As the meal finally came together, she laughed, understanding that in Marrakech, even cooking was a grand adventure.

The smell of the olive oil, the texture of the leather and care of storied hands; listening to Kamal’s details, he felt closer to the game than watching any match. This humble workshop housed football’s magnificent history.

Meet Jaouad, owner of our most trusted metal atelier in the souks. His skill knows no bounds and he has created many pieces you will see within Dar Al Dall.

These acrobatic locals appear everywhere in the Medina, but none more regal than this one, captured lounging before the Almoravid Koubba in the early morning light. Whether stretched out on sun-warmed stone, leaping from roof to roof, or weaving effortlessly through the alleyways, Marrakech’s cats move through the city as if it were built entirely for them.

Ben Youssef Medersa

Originally built as a Qur’anic school and established in 1346, the Ben Youssef Medesra is a captivating example of Moroccan architecture; adorned with geometric patterns and carved stucco. The inscription over the entryway reads ‘You who enter my door, may your highest hopes be exceeded’, which has remained a true sentiment for centuries.

Almoravid Koubba

Dating to the early 12th century, the Almoravid Koubba is Marrakech’s oldest surviving monument and one of the last traces of the Almoravid dynasty. Built under Ali Ben Youssef as part of an ablutions complex, it showcases rare pre-Almohad architecture: carved stucco, Kufic script and refined geometric forms.

Buried for centuries and rediscovered in the 20th century, it now sits quietly just steps from Dar Al Dall—a small, often overlooked doorway into the city’s earliest history, hiding in plain sight.

A visit to the hammam is a treat to yourself and your skin. An historic, ceremonial experience of gentle scrubbing, nourishing oils, rich scents, and salts. After the treatment, as you sit in your gown sipping warm mint tea, an overwhelming sense of calm prepares you for the best night’s sleep you’ll ever have.

Just a stone’s throw from our Riad lies an expansive collection of more than 8,000 curated photographs, postcards, and prints, immersing you in the rich tapestry of the Berber life of old Morocco. Spending a few hours here offers you a unique insight into the past, while the rooftop terrace café provides the perfect vantage point to admire the city.

Our kitchen is a hub of activity, experimentation, and vibrant energy, bustling as we craft dishes and menus, or share experiences and discoveries with our guests. We take pride in preparing Harissa, Romesco sauce, or an array of preserves and condiments in-house, perfect complements to traditional dishes from Morocco, North Africa, and the Mediterranean.

This comfort dish is a true taste of Marrakech and a symbol of festivities.

Soft vermicelli with perfectly cooked chicken is covered with an intricately seasoned onion sauce and an almond and fragrant spice crumb. We have this wonderful dish on one of our dinner menus for you to experience.

Olive Oil

At Dar Al Dall, we hold everything food-related close to heart—and few things bring us more joy than the olive oil from our partner and friend Mehdi of Terra Salam.

Just outside Marrakech, Mehdi tends to his 20 hectare grove with care and purpose, producing organic oil that’s as pure as it is flavourful. There’s little better than tearing into our house bread, still warm, a generous dip of Terra Salam’s oil with a pinch of salt. Simple, local, unforgettable.

At Dar Al Dall, our kitchen prepares a curated selection of traditional Moroccan pastries—flaky, fragrant, and rich with almonds, dates, and orange blossom.

 At Dar Al Dall, a private and intimate dinner can be set in the quiet elegance of our candlelit salon, warmed by the fireplace during winter months. The seasonal menus feature for example delicate Moroccan salads, traditional pastillas, sea bass or various other tagines. As you dine, live musicians play discreetly in the courtyard, adding a soulful note to the evening.

The ritual begins every morning at dawn, as households wake to mix and knead dough, which is then carried to the bread ovens. Kind-eyed bakers stoke fires and turn the dough into delicious crusty loaves of khobz. From 5–8 February 2026, the 1-54 Contemporary African Art Fair returns to Marrakech, gathering over 20 galleriesfrom across Africa and the diaspora for a rich, city-wide programme of contemporary art.

Beyond the central fair, parallel exhibitions and special projects take place across the city—from a solo exhibition by Elladj Lincy Deloumeaux at MAP, to curated shows at MACAAL and the Yves Saint Laurent Museum, including a photography retrospective of David Seidner.
